Dixons Music Primary has won a competition to name a gritter

Posted 9th December 2024

Our staff and students are celebrating after winning the Bradford council “name a gritter” competition, which was launched earlier this year.

Bradford council has five gritting wagons, one from each constituency, and they tasked primary schools across the district with coming up with suitable names for them. To put their suggestions of names forward for the competition, students had to colour in a drawing of a gritting wagon. We were so excited about the opportunity to enter the competition, and we were pleased to find out we were the only school in a clean air zone to register interest.

We received a visit from Bradford council’s gritting team and the Lord Mayor this week during our assembly, along with the gritting wagon we named, 'Glittery Ice Machine'.  Students had the opportunity to look inside the gritting wagon, see their winning name on the front of the wagon and have their pictures taken with the gritter.

We are delighted to have won the name a gritter competition and thoroughly enjoyed meeting the Lord Mayor and the gritting team, and seeing our very own name on the gritter! This was an incredible opportunity for collaboration between our school and our local community.

Nicola Morrissey, head of school at Dixons Music Primary Academy, said:

“We’re so proud of our students for their creativity and enthusiasm in this competition. Naming the gritter was not only a fun activity but also a fantastic way to engage with our local community and learn about the important work the gritting team does to keep us safe during winter. The competition has enabled us to strengthen ties with Bradford Council, and it has been a great experience for everyone involved!"
